SUMMARY:Adult Brit Mitzvah Cohort (Hevruta)
DESCRIPTION:Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation’s Adult Brit* Mitzvah Cohort 2025-2026 \nFor anyone who has a different relationship with Judaism than they did at age 13 \nEngage your Adult Jewish identity with this 1 year program culminating in a special Shabbat Brit Mitzvah ritual on November 21\, 2026 \nOur JRC Adult Brit Mitzvah program combines group study\, hevruta/partner learning\, Torah Trope\, Spiritual Autobiography\, and topics such as Liturgy and Prayer\, God and Theology\, Reconstructionism\, Bodies\, Eating and Daily Living\, Shabbat\, Halacha and Traditions\, Tikkun Olam\, Gender and Identities\, the Jewish Library\, and Jewish History. \nThis program is for you if you:\nHave a different relationship to Judaism now than you did when you were a child\nNever became bar/bat mitzvah as a teen or are looking for a different experience\nWant to deepen your knowledge\, skills and engagement with Jewish traditions\nHave been part of a Jewish community for a while\, but are exploring formal conversion and learning \nWhen and Where:\nClasses meet Tuesday evenings from 7-8:30pm at JRC in Evanston\, will include some group\, individual\, and hevruta meetings\, and will be multi-access/zoom friendly. \nProgram Dates:\nDecember 2\, 2025 – May 26\, 2026: Classes\nSummer 2026: Independent Work: Spiritual Autobiography and Torah Trope\nOctober 2026: Sharing Spiritual Autobiographies\nNovember 21\, 2026: Shabbat Adult Brit Mitzvah Ritual \nFaculty:\nRabbi Rachel Weiss\, and Cantor Howard Friedland \n*Why Brit and not Bnai? Bnai/Bat/Bar Mitzvah literally translates to “Children/Child of the Commandments/Values” and is a gendered term. “Brit Mitzvah” literally translates to “entering a covenant of Jewish Values” and is a non-gendered term. As this is a program for adults\, we use this more inclusive language which better represents our values and our relationship to Judaism.

SUMMARY:Join JRC at the Walk for Warmth
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars! Please join us for Interfaith Action of Evanston’s Walk for Warmth on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service\, Monday January 19th. Walking together\, we are a physical embodiment of Dr. King’s vision of the beloved community. His commitment to service is reflected in the route we take past the many faith communities that house Interfaith Action’s overnight shelter in rotation. The Walk helps raise awareness of homelessness in our community. \nPlease register to join JRC at the Walk. There is no charge to participate\, but your donation helps to enable IAE to keep its shelter doors open every night from mid-October to mid-May\, providing life-saving warmth to those without homes during the coldest months of the year. The money also helps fund Interfaith Action’s Hospitality Center and Weekend Morning Shelter\, which offer safe and warm places during morning hours seven days a week.

SUMMARY:Progressive Chevra Kadisha | Tahara Training
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the ancient ritual of Tahara and join other JRC members in an act of lovingkindness. \nProgressive Chevra Kadisha (PCK) basic Tahara training will take place on Sunday\, January 11 at 10am at Chicago Jewish Funerals. \nJRC is part of the Progressive Chevra Kadisha\, a volunteer inter-congregational society dedicated to conducting the ceremony of Tahara (cleansing of the body) in preparation for Jewish burial. The Progressive Chevra Kadisha is facilitated by volunteers from JRC\, Beth Emet\, Lomdim\, Or Chadash\, and the Egalitarian Minyan/Ner Tamid of West Rogers Park to serve the needs of members and their families. \nWhen someone dies\, Progressive Chevra Kadisha members visit the funeral home and prepare the body of the deceased according to the centuries-old customs of our people. Progressive Chevra Kadisha members wash the body (rechitza)\, perform a tahara (ritual cleansing)\, and dress the deceased in a set of tachrichim (simple white garments) for burial. The Progressive Chevra Kadisha performs this service anonymously as gemilut chesed (an ultimate act of lovingkindness) to honor the dead and to comfort the living who remember them. \nThe Progressive Chevra Kadisha in Chicago makes taharah accessible for people of all backgrounds\, affiliations\, and gender identities. Join us for an informational training on joining their chevra kadisha and performing taharah. \nTo RSVP and for more information contact Liz Feldman at lizfeldman@gmail.com or 773-909-3451.

SUMMARY:Circle of Chai Summer Gathering
DESCRIPTION:What is the Circle of Chai? \nThe Circle of Chai is comprised of members who have chosen to support JRC with a minimum annual contribution of $1000 above full dues. Circle membership does not denote wealth so much as regard for JRC that is expressed monetarily. \nWhy it matters \nAt JRC (as at most synagogues)\, membership dues cover only a portion of the annual budget-just over 50%. When you join the Circle of Chai\, you ensure that JRC continues to offer all our congregants and the community a wide range of worship opportunities\, religious and adult education programming\, and tikkun olam engagement. These funds go towards Operations and contribute to JRC’s financial stability. Your Circle of Chai membership also continues JRC’s longstanding commitment to welcoming everyone\, regardless of ability to pay full dues. \nHow you can join the Circle of Chai \nWhen you renew your membership each year\, you can indicate that you would like to join the Circle of Chai on the renewal form. You can also contribute a minimum of $1000 in donations over the membership year (July-June). These gifts are above and beyond the full dues\, as well as religious school\, preschool\, B’nai mitzvah\, Capital Campaign\, and Building Fund commitments. \nQuestions? \nPlease contact the Development Committee at devcommittee@jrctogether.org

SUMMARY:JRC Book Group: House on Endless Waters by Emuna Elan
DESCRIPTION:Join the engaging conversation with your JRC community! JRC’s Book Group meets on the second Sunday of every month\, typically over Zoom but this month we will meet in-person Leslie Rosen’s house on July 21\, 6334 N. Sheridan Road\, Chicago. All are welcome! Please RSVP to Jill Berkeley to let her know you’ll be attending and email with any questions about parking. \nThis month’s book is: House on Endless Waters by Emuna Elan. \nGenre:  Holocaust Fiction \nRenowned author Yoel Blum reluctantly agrees to visit his birthplace of Amsterdam to promote his books\, despite promising his late mother that he would never return to that city. While touring the Jewish Historical Museum with his wife\, Yoel stumbles upon footage portraying prewar Dutch Jewry and is astonished to see the youthful face of his beloved mother staring back at him\, posing with his father\, his older sister…and an infant he doesn’t recognize. \nThis unsettling discovery launches him into a fervent search for the truth\, shining a light on Amsterdam’s dark wartime history—the underground networks that hid Jewish children away from danger and those who betrayed their own for the sake of survival. The deeper into the past Yoel digs up\, the better he understands his mother’s silence\, and the more urgent the question that has unconsciously haunted him for a lifetime—Who am I?—becomes.

SUMMARY:JRC Book Group: Tomorrow\, Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
DESCRIPTION:Join the engaging conversation with your JRC community! JRC’s Book Group meets on the second Sunday of every month over Zoom. All are welcome! \nThis month’s book is: Tomorrow\, Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin\n\nIn this exhilarating novel\, two friends–often in love\, but never lovers–come together as creative partners in the world of video game design\, where success brings them fame\, joy\, tragedy\, duplicity\, and\, ultimately\, a kind of immortality. \nOn a bitter-cold day\, in the December of his junior year at Harvard\, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees\, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform\, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment\, she pretends she hasn’t heard him\, but then\, she turns\, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends\, intimates since childhood\, borrow money\, beg favors\, and\, before even graduating college\, they have created their first blockbuster\, Ichigo. Overnight\, the world is theirs. Not even twenty-five years old\, Sam and Sadie are brilliant\, successful\, and rich\, but these qualities won’t protect them from their own creative ambitions or the betrayals of their hearts. \nSpanning thirty years\, from Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, to Venice Beach\, California\, and lands in between and far beyond\, Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow\, and Tomorrow\, and Tomorrow is a dazzling and intricately imagined novel that examines the multifarious nature of identity\, disability\, failure\, the redemptive possibilities in play\, and above all\, our need to connect: to be loved and to love. Yes\, it is a love story\, but it is not one you have read before. \n \nPlease RSVP to receive the address of the book group’s meeting place to Jill Berkeley: jbb652@comcast.net.
